Reasons for Executive Coaching

October 8, 2009 - Cath McCord

Being in the top management rank can be tough. You have the responsibility of the many people in your team, but being at the top can be lonely. It can be very difficult to find someone who can give you an unbiased opinion of your performance. Not only is development feedback essential to your career, but also support and guidance. So where do you turn to in order to get all of this?

Executive coaching is the answer, and many large companies are already employing this strategy. In fact, several major companies include executive coaching as part of their executive development. Nowadays, coaching isn't used as a tool to improve underperformance; it is being used widely as a way to support top producers. Many companies conduct coaching to hone the skills of individuals who have the potential of being future organizational leaders.

If you have a goal in mind, but you admit you're not sure how you can get there, executive coaching will do wonders for you. You have the initiative and the drive, but you may lack an essential skill you might want to hone. An executive coach can support you and help hone such skills in order to help you achieve your goals. But this alone may not suffice. You would have to be open minded in order to receive feedback for your improvement. You should be willing to take criticism positively and find a way to create positive change.

Executive coaching is also beneficial for executives undergoing change in their career. This may be in the form of promotion or other new challenges. Although you may be confident in your skills to handle new tasks, it would definitely help to have an objective third-party that can act as a sounding board to help you reach a whole new level of performance.

But perhaps one of the best benefits that executive coaching can give you is the executive coach's dedication and commitment to support you and your goals. Even if a coach is hired by the company to achieve company goals, coaches discuss perspectives and alternatives with no other agenda than to support the client.

Executive coaching can help you leverage your strengths in order to become more effective in your career. If you feel you've got a lot of untapped potential and you know where you're headed but you're not sure how to get there, executive coaching will surely benefit you.
